This 1986 painting by Zhu Xinjian "Golden Lotus Lady with red corset" was painted by the artist in 1986. It was exhibited at the Galerie Lise Cormery in 1987 on the occasion of his personal exhibition "Zhu Xinjian and the beauty of flesh 朱新建 Erotic Art" while the artist was staying in Paris. This painting inaugurates the series of paintings known as 朱新建's Golden Lotus series. Zhu Xinjian 朱新建 (1953-2014) is a painter from the People's Republic of China, born in 1953 in Dufang, Jiangxi Province, died in Beijing in 2014. The scholarly artist is inspired by the great Chinese tradition of calligraphy and erotic art. In her book, "Post-War Art of the School of Paris", Lise Cormery writes her biography which follows. "Lise Cormery had the chance to meet him in his small studio and workshop in 1986 and to discover his art there, while he stayed for a few years in Paris. "A member of the Association of Chinese Artists, he is considered as the most important of the Chinese Post-War Literate Painters. He graduated in 1980 from the University of Nanjing where he studied Ancient Chinese Art and the classic texts of Ancient Chinese, then he became a professor there. Although he was awarded the Silver Medal for the Sixth Chinese National Art Exhibition, he was also able to illustrate children's books and create cartoons for the Shanghai Animation Film Studio and China Central Television ( CCTV). When he studied at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, his work was released there. Under the brush of Zhu Xinjian, the exquisite young women of yesteryear invite themselves into a contemporary world that is both Western and Eastern, deliciously and voluptuously erotic, in the softness and subtle beauty of a timeless art. The atmosphere of Zhu Xinjian's composition is imbued with the spirit of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) but he reinvents it with an original style imbued with poetry, introducing us to a new, personal language of great delicacy. , dreamlike and poetic, subtle and delicate as much by the drawing, the choice of colors of his painting, as by the composition. He is part of the School of Paris, given his stay in Paris and the inspiration he was able to draw there, increasing his hybrid vision of art so singular. He began in the 80s to paint his poetic naked women and named this series of tender naked women "Painting of beauty". In 1987, Lise Cormery organized a personal exhibition for him. He names his new series of paintings "The Golden Lotus" "Le Lotus Doré", after the erotic romance of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). When he first shows his works at an exhibition in Hubei Province, China, although exquisite, they cause a scandal. In her book on Pierre Granville, Lise Cormery, underlines "a schizophrenic society both in China and in France where nudes are banned and only become 'politically correct' once approved by museums and governmental institutions. remembers Courbet's "Origin of the World", hidden for so many years that will only be admired once hung in the Musée d'Orsay. In his 1987 exhibition "Zhu Xinjian and the Beauty of Flesh 朱新建Erotic Art" Lise Cormery writes her preface: "The art of Zhu Xinjian like that of Gilles Cormery suffers from the prudishness and hypocrisy of the Tartuffes, both in France and in China, who, although thinking only of "that", throw into the Hells of National Libraries or art collections the naked bodies that sing of love and the beauty of the world In a sinister time when vulgarity prevailed and The Botticelli were banished, Zhu Xinjian and Gilles Cormery had the audacity to always paint In contrast to a post-war contemporary art that ignored freehand art, sublimating the non-existent combined with ugliness and decrepitude. Zhu Xinjian and Gilles Cormery in a style that some will qualify as literary or "literati", tame the painting, calligraphy or drawing of yesteryear and now, to better exalt the passion and the delights of innocent flesh in the natural and generous momentum of the bodies which abandon themselves before the painter and us." Zhu Xinjian

China  • 1953

Zhu Xinjian 朱新建 (1953 Dufang, Jiangxi province-Pékin 2014) China is a Chinese painter. Lise Cormery in her book "Post-War Ecole de Paris Art" writes his biography since she discovered his art when she met him in his small studio in Paris in 1986. "Member of China Artists Association, Zhu is considered like the most important Post War "Literati painting" artists. Under his brush exquisite ladies from yesteryear become part of our contemporary world looking both Oriental and Western, with a delicious and soft erotic style. Zhu graduated from the School of Fine Arts of Nanjing University in China where he became professor. During his studies and his teaching years he mastered the practice of Ancient Chinese Art and the richness of Ancient Chinese Art Litterature. He was awarded the Silver Medal during the 6th National Art Exhibition of China but was able to illustrate as well books for children and design Cartoons for Shanghai Animation Film Studio and China Central Television (CCTV). Zhu Xinjian belongs to the Post-War Ecole de Paris, since he spent several years in Paris, France and studied in Beaux Arts de Paris where the freedom opened his artistic path to a new hybrid Western and Oriental art world. During his sojourn he had Solo shows in Galerie Lise Cormery in Paris. First beginning to paint women in the 1980's, Zhu titled his series of nudes, "Painting of the Beauty". In 1986, another set of paintings, "The Golden Lotus", named after the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) erotic novel, was first shown during an exhibition of young artists in Hubei Province, China. Although exquisite, they caused some scandal in China and France, in schizophrenic societies where nudes become "politically correct" only once exhibited in Museums and State institutions. Lise Cormery in her book on Pierre Granville Donations, denounced the hypocritical attitude of Art Collectors and curators, indeed "L'origine du Monde" by Courbet, hidden during so many years will be admired only once hanged in Musée d'Orsay.  In 1987, Lise Cormery writes the text of Zhu Xinjian Solo Show in her Paris Gallery, "Zhu Xinjian et la beauté de la chair 朱新建 Erotic Art". "Zhu Xinjian suffer like French painter Gilles Cormery of the hypocritical devious minds in France and China regarding the beauty of nudity in art. Indeed, Botticelli is far gone in a contemporary art world brought to nought by the unskilled and the ignorant. The new Credo is only devoted to ugliness and decrepitude thus the beauty of women, tender flesh, love and passion are unanimously condemned."

2010 Christopher Crouch "Contemporary Chinese Visual Culture" Zhu Xinjian Portrait. "" He is a real new scholar painter because he becomes the carrier of artistic concept of the contemporary era using a style taken and modified from tradition." In China "The 1985 New Art Movement in the New scholar painting arose in response, to avant-garde as well as the state theory, that Chinese painting has reached its end." "Zhu works of naked women with bound feet during the '85 New Wave of Art Movement" in China aroused much controversy. Zhu unique style and erotic element of women with bound feet was regarded as in conflict with the ideological convention at that time and even condemned as “sheer feudalistic rubbish".

Li Xianting  considers Zhu to be one of the representative figures of the Southern School of new painting of the neo-literati. The notion “hooligan culture" was thereby coined and it influenced the later on “cynical realism" in China."
