Presentation
Laurentiu grew up in Romania in the midst of a communist dictatorship. An overflowing sensitivity and a need for freedom push him towards artistic expression. He studied art from an early age, up to a doctorate in painting (University of Art and Design of Cluj-Napoca). From 2000, he began to exhibit in Romania and abroad.
The artist is part of the New Figuration movement: between abstraction and narrative figuration, between "Art brut" and "Contemporary Art". His paintings are narrative, they tell of the interiorization of the feelings that torment the artist.
Laurentiu has spontaneity in the ideas and in the stories he tells. His great culture is a source of inspiration: mythologies reviewed and corrected by his care, popular stories from his childhood and his country. He paints in acrylics with an exhilarating, warlike ardor and with a strong physical commitment.
He has boldness in the colors, he plays with them and deliberately exacerbates them to force himself to harmonize the canvas. The colorful cutting recalls the art of stained glass and the faces associated with Eastern Christian rites participate in the sanctification of his work. Yet it is secular work that goes as far as eroticism. He can easily switch from icon to erotic painting. Both are loaded with tenderness and love.
The artist recreates a dreamlike universe where the symbolism of the heart and Cupid are omnipresent. It is a perpetual hymn to love, a call to fight against the dryness of the heart. The abundance of details conveys an overflow of emotions. His work is charged with the optimism essential to the development of his creation.
In search of universal communication, he hesitates between art, "madness" and humor. Laurentiu is however not at the end of his quest since he is preparing a doctorate on art brut "Art ou folie" at the Fine arts of Cluj-Napoca (Romania).
