The figure painted on this canvas stands out against a bright red background. He holds a spear in his right hand. His piercing gaze, whose pupils mirror the black of his skin, stares haughtily at the viewer. Inspired by photographs of Agoji warriors, this work depicts a soldier belonging to the all-female army of the Kingdom of Dahomey (present-day Benin). This army was established by its first queen, Hangbé, in the 16th century. This invention was intended to demonstrate that in matters of war, women are as effective as men. Even when successively replaced by kings, women served as the eminences grises of the political system. Everything in this work is designed to highlight the character's complexion: the yellow headdress, the red necklace, the white shells, the yellow bracelets, and the clothing, dotted with brown stars, the same color as the bracelets.
