Pierre Ledda is a painter and sculptor from Marseille born in 1914 and died in 1994. An ironworker and boilermaker by trade, it was only in the 1950s that he began his career as a sculptor. A true autodidact in this discipline, we consider him to be an authentic "singular" in the sense that he was able to develop a technique of his own using the materials he had available. It was in fact in the workshop to which his employer gave him free access during his breaks and leisure hours that he practiced his art. From this limitation to the tools and materials available to him was born the specificity of his work, which can be roughly schematized by the very personal use of arc welding. By means of the latter, he not only assembles workshop scraps but also models their surfaces by adding points of material, thus giving the whole an extremely worked appearance.
Pierre Ledda was able to enjoy a certain notoriety in Marseille where galleries and respected critics recognized his work. However, the latter sometimes complained that the latter often gave more media coverage to the sculptor César than to himself, even though it was César who came to ask him for advice and not the other way around. The fault certainly lies largely with him due to his stubborn refusal of any careerism and any "commercial" concession. This contempt for the market, if it harmed his recognition at the time, today gives his works an obvious truth.
Pierre Ledda's works, when they reach us today, no longer have a name. At least, this name has most often been lost. So each dealer or auctioneer names them according to what he sees or feels. And this is not always easy. In the case of "Mosquito", we hesitated between several insects but finally the length of the wings, the thinness of the body and the presence of a proboscis made us lean towards a mosquito. Not being zoologists and even less entomologists, any other interpretation is obviously possible.
