EPICURE SENSI

Curated by Myriam Marrache

“Pleasure is the beginning and the end of a happy life.” Epicurus, Letter to Menoeceus, § 128–129.
A measured happiness according to Epicurus, in which self-awareness and the satisfaction of natural and necessary desires are actively sought. While this philosophy recognizes sensations as a fundamental criterion of truth, Maimonides recalls the importance of using the five senses in the service of the sacred, directing these faculties and human action toward a higher purpose: “The sensitive part of the soul is that by which man perceives sensible things…”. Moses Maimonides (Rambam), The Eight Chapters (Shemonah Perakim), ch. 1, § 5.
Allegorically, the gardens of Eden and Epicurus, whose conceptions of human existence diverge, one being rooted in a theological conception, the other in a philosophical conception, open here a shared reflection on our relationship to pleasure and balance. If the senses allow us to apprehend the external world, what of their internalization? The exhibition explores the way in which our sensory perceptions awaken human consciousness, nourishing both reflection and memory.
The meeting place Bon Vivant, located at 32 Ahad Ha’Am in Tel Aviv, offers an ideal setting for this new exhibition: exceptional natural wines, a garden overlooked by a digital installation, and an industrial minimalist interior occupied by works of art.
Michal Mozes offers a contemporary vision of still life, through compositions in which raw foods, floral elements and everyday objects come together. Sculptors Aviv Atias and SB Ceramics explore matter organically, making touch the natural extension of sight. Hélène Zeray allows us to glimpse her fragmented personal emotions, giving form to what the perception of the world becomes upon contact with consciousness, while Anna Muravich illustrates an inner world in formation and movement, and Dekel Harari, a new freshness within a contemporary reality. Finally, Paul Rozenboim extends this exploration by occupying the outdoor garden with a digital installation, opening the sensory experience to another dimension.
