CURATORIAL CONCEPT
This exhibition delivers a dynamic cross-section of contemporary Andalusian art, highlighting its visual authenticity, material
audacity, and intrinsic vigor. Beneath the piercing southern light emerges a distinctive dialogue among artists driven by diverse
and often contradictory artistic lexicons. Infused with Mediterranean luminosity, bold palettes, and vital tension, the featured
works challenge established conventions, presenting an uncompromising perspective on the spirit and polyphony of today's
Spanish art scene.
CURATORIAL STATEMENT
Spanish masterworks have long occupied a central place in the global consciousness. The legacies of Velázquez, Zurbarán,
Murillo, El Greco, and Goya, alongside twentieth-century icons like Picasso and Dalí, define fundamental chapters of art
history. Yet the living reality of contemporary Spanish art—its conflicts, raw energy, and evolving paradigms—remains far less
explored abroad.
Art Gallery NIKA (Málaga) curates a comprehensive, incisive encounter with the contemporary visual arts of southern Spain.
By bringing together artists of radically disparate origins, methodologies, and visual sensibilities, the gallery shapes a
multifaceted dialogue that captures the creative pulse of the region:
• Alberto Urbano Moreno — An established pioneer of Spanish Art Brut. Provocative and unapologetic, his Chaotic Art
directly challenges visual complacency, echoing the raw, defiant charge of early rock and roll.
• Iker Muro Uranga (Murone) — An internationally celebrated muralist whose background in graphic design underpins
colossal public interventions worldwide. Known for bold geometric abstractions and vivid palettes in major global cities, the
artist presents a rare small-format canvas here—translating monumentality into an intimate scale.
• Eugenio Montoro Aybar — A distinguished visual artist, master restorer, and university educator working at the nexus of
classical aesthetics, film noir, and contemporary urban culture. Known for his acclaimed Scene of the Crime: Tokyo series, he
investigates the compelling dichotomy between idealized geisha portraiture and brutalist metropolitan grit. Employing
handcrafted deep-box frames, cast epoxy resins, and poetic haiku integrated directly into the pictorial field, his practice delivers
a profound exploration of conceptual narrative and material resonance.
• Leonardo Donoso — Whose practice centers on gestural abstraction and emotional tension. Through structural impastos,
atmospheric color fields, and neon calligraphic accents, his works examine the delicate balance between contained kinetic
force and palpable silence.
• Niche Ramírez — A professional Cuban-born dancer and choreographer based in Málaga, who channels bodily kinetics and
stage presence onto the flat plane of the canvas, capturing raw physical movement through fluid brushstrokes and vivid
figurative distortion.
