Biography
Kolapo Olorunyemi is a Nigerian visual artist whose practice centers on contemporary portraiture as a site for exploring identity, memory, and human connection. Working primarily in oil and charcoal, he draws on both intuitive expression and a background in Applied Physics to examine the underlying structures that shape how we see ourselves and others.
His recent work engages with Afrofuturism, developing Nutopia as a conceptual framework where past, present, and imagined futures intersect. Within this space, his figures often exist in states of transition, carrying traces of history while negotiating new forms of identity.
Kolapo has exhibited internationally across Africa, Europe, the United Kingdom, Asia, and the United States, with solo exhibitions including Beyond the Obvious (Spain, 2022), Afro-Futurist (Zambia, 2022), Nutopia (India, 2024/25), and Continuum (Nigeria, 2025). He has also participated in key residencies and exhibitions, including the Goethe Institute’s Dreaming New World (2024).
He is the founder of Elbowroom Art Movement, an initiative dedicated to fostering creative growth and expanding opportunities for emerging artists.
