Biography

JOSEP MARIA VAYREDA CANADELL (1932 - 2001): Josep Maria Vayreda Canadell was a Catalan Spanish painter known for his distinctive depictions of European cities, Mediterranean landscapes, harbors, and café terraces. Born in Olot, Catalonia, Spain, he came from a family with a strong artistic heritage and was a descendant of the Vayreda family, associated with the renowned Olot School of landscape painting. He received his early artistic training at the School of Fine Arts in Olot and briefly studied law at the University of Barcelona before dedicating himself fully to painting. In 1958, he held an exhibition in Barcelona before moving to Paris, where he lived and worked until 1966. His time in Paris played an important role in shaping his artistic development, leading him to explore abstraction and informalism before developing a distinctive figurative style built around simplified, geometric forms. Working primarily in oil, Vayreda captured the streets and architecture of Paris, the canals and waterways of European cities, and the sunlit terraces and coastal scenery of places such as Cadaqués. His paintings combine carefully structured compositions with expressive color and atmospheric light. He exhibited widely in Europe and North America, including in London, Paris, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and New York. He died in Girona in 2001, leaving a body of work that bridges Catalan landscape traditions and modern European figurative painting.
