Biography

MABEL FLORENCE YOUNG (1889 - 1974): Mabel Florence Young was a British-born artist who spent much of her career painting the landscapes of Ireland. Born on the Isle of Wight, England, she moved to Dublin in 1914 and began her artistic career later in life. In 1924, she met the Irish landscape painter Paul Henry, who encouraged her artistic development and became her mentor; they married in 1954. Young became known for her impressionistic oil paintings and watercolors, particularly landscapes of County Wicklow, including its woodlands, glens, lakes, and mountain scenery. She first exhibited with the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1928 and continued showing her work there for decades. Her paintings were also exhibited in galleries and exhibitions throughout Ireland and abroad. Young continued painting after Henry's death in 1958, holding a solo exhibition in Dublin in 1962. Her work is represented in collections including Dublin's Hugh Lane Gallery, while her notebooks are held by the Ulster Museum in Belfast.
