Biography

Philip Thorngate (1932–2003): American Impressionist painter best known for his plein-air landscapes and seascapes of California, particularly the Monterey Peninsula. Born near Shanghai, China, to missionary parents, Thorngate later returned to China before studying medicine at Western Reserve University and practicing as a physician in Monterey for approximately 30 years. He pursued painting alongside his medical career before eventually devoting himself to art full time, studying with Carmel artist Keith Lindberg. His paintings are characterized by atmospheric light, natural color, and direct observation of the California landscape and coastline. Thorngate joined the Carmel Art Association in 1985 and served as its president in 1994, and his work is represented in the collection of the Monterey Museum of Art.
