GEORGE CARLSON (1940 - 2021): George Carlson was an American painter, illustrator, and sculptor best known for his imaginative, surreal, and often humorous figurative works. Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1940, Carlson studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago before establishing a diverse career that encompassed painting, illustration, sculpture, and printmaking. His highly inventive imagery frequently combined human and animal forms with dreamlike landscapes, mythology, folklore, and popular culture. Carlson's work is characterized by meticulous draftsmanship, unusual perspectives, rich color, and a playful yet sometimes dark sense of humor. He worked extensively as an illustrator for books, magazines, and album covers while also exhibiting his fine art internationally. His paintings and sculptures have been included in numerous museum and gallery exhibitions and are held in private and public collections.
