Biography

LEONID AFREMOV (1955 - 2019): Leonid Afremov was a Belarusian-Israeli painter best known for his vibrant modern Impressionist paintings created primarily with oil and a palette knife. Born in Vitebsk, Belarus, in 1955, he graduated from the Vitebsk Art School in 1978, where he was influenced by artists including Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Amedeo Modigliani, and the French Impressionists. Afremov developed a highly recognizable technique built around thick, textured applications of brilliant color, using the palette knife to create luminous reflections and energetic surfaces. His subjects included rainy city streets, landscapes, seascapes, flowers, portraits, and scenes of everyday life. After immigrating to Israel in 1990 and later moving to the United States, Afremov gained international recognition, particularly through the growth of online art sales, which allowed him to reach collectors directly. He eventually settled in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, where he continued painting and teaching. Afremov died there on August 19, 2019. Today, he is particularly remembered for his distinctive use of intense color, impasto, and palette-knife technique.
