Biography

SHELDON SCHONEBERG (1926 - 2012): Sheldon Clyde Schoneberg was an American painter, printmaker, and draftsman celebrated for his expressive pastel works and figurative compositions. Born in Illinois in 1926, he moved with his family to Los Angeles by 1930. He studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles and earned both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Southern California, completing his graduate degree in 1951. He continued his artistic studies at UCLA, the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, and the Universidad Michoacana in Morelia, Mexico. Schoneberg became known for richly colored depictions of women, floral subjects, musicians, dancers, and scenes inspired by theatrical and everyday life. His work combines graceful figures, luminous color, and fluid draftsmanship, often conveying a sense of movement and romantic atmosphere. Alongside his studio practice, he taught at the college level, serving as a professor at the State University of New York at New Paltz and the University of Maine at Gorham. His work was exhibited in the United States and internationally, and he is remembered for his distinctive approach to figurative art and pastel painting.
