A graphite drawing "St.-Bavo in Haarlem" – 03-10-23 is a break from the continuous flow of Cubist female forms. So, I thought, on a whim, I decided to postpone them for a while and return to the sketch. Just for fun, to create a drawing in one day. Well, not exactly one day. I started yesterday before the art class began when I still had time before my students arrived. Just a few compositional lines to get things started. Today, I did 95% in one go. Here is the result. Hatching It is done in my typical hatching style that I like to call mine. Over the years, I have continued to make pencil and pastel drawings in this way. It is surely to practice my hands and I just suppose for the love of line. What other than simple diagonal lines to start. To see if I can make them parallel on the paper. The arrangement of the large proportions came next. Well, nothing special to mention. It is my first after Marlot – 27-04-23 anyway. At that time, I had ambitions to go out and make sketches that spring. Instead, I worked a lot on my website but fortunately, autumn arrived. Many beautiful colors outside and this drawing could be a prelude. Haarlem The landscape was not done live however. It is just a reference photo that I took when I was in Haarlem. This could be some time ago, visiting the Teylers Museum. The Saint-Bavo church is just around the corner. I remember being attracted by the sunlight coming from the upper left corner. In this particular case, the ray of sun is a presence created by the camera. Such a thing never appears during a live drawing session. So you are only hindered by the sun and tempted to squint. Perhaps the best of both worlds, wouldn't you say? I think David Hockney would agree with that, considering his comments on photography and art.
