Description
A mysterious figure spins through an imaginary landscape, suspended between the excitement of flight and the uncertainty of losing control. Its extended arms and dramatically flowing hair create a sense of continuous movement, while delicate pastel colors give the scene a dreamlike atmosphere.
This original artwork belongs to the Degree of Presence series, in which the artist explores how people respond to radical changes in the world and how they understand their own identities within those transformations.
The figure rotates around its outstretched arms, influenced by tightly stretched fabric. This movement suggests an external force that cannot easily be resisted. At the same time, the image recalls childhood games of spinning like a carousel, when dizziness could become an enjoyable imitation of flying.
The artist brings these opposing sensations together: fear of the unknown and pleasure in surrendering to movement.
Painted with professional watercolors and detailed with archival ink, the composition combines powder blue, lavender, soft pink, turquoise, and golden yellow. Intricate black lines describe the body, flowing fabric, and unusual landscape formations.
Its surreal imagery and punk-grotesque character give the artwork a distinctive personality, while the soft colors balance its psychological tension.
This contemporary figurative drawing will appeal to collectors who appreciate imaginative art, unusual characters, and symbolic explorations of human experience. It can bring a sense of curiosity and movement to a modern living room, bedroom, creative studio, or personal gallery wall.
It also makes a meaningful gift for someone who values individuality, creative freedom, and artwork that invites different interpretations.
Materials: Professional watercolors, archival ink on heavyweight 300 gsm watercolor paper.
Shipping / Display: The artwork is shipped rolled in a protective tube and will require framing after delivery.
Presentation
Yana Dmitrieva is a contemporary artist whose practice moves between figuration, abstraction, and surrealism to examine uncertainty, adaptation, and the preservation of self. Her paintings focus on moments when familiar structures begin to dissolve and identity becomes something fluid rather than fixed.
Figures in Dmitrieva's work are frequently faceless. By withholding individual expression, she shifts attention toward the body itself — its posture, tension, balance, hesitation, and instinctive response to circumstances beyond its control. Human forms stretch, merge with fish and other organisms, or inhabit spaces that seem simultaneously above and below water.
Migration forms an important conceptual undercurrent in her practice, but the work deliberately avoids literal autobiography. Displacement becomes a broader psychological condition that can arise through relocation, loss, motherhood, separation, reinvention, or any experience in which a familiar version of the self no longer feels sufficient.
Her distinctive palette of aquatic blues, luminous greens, violets, and unexpected chromatic transitions intensifies this sense of instability. Landscape becomes less a physical location than an extension of consciousness.
Dmitrieva's ongoing Displaced Bodies series considers the body as an archive of uncertainty. Rather than illustrating what has happened to a person, the paintings preserve the physical state of being caught between what was and what comes next — a vulnerable, unresolved territory in which transformation has begun but identity has not yet settled.
