Mid-Century Edit

Of all the interior design styles out there today, the Mid-Century Modern interior is undoubtedly the most famous and popular of them all. Born at the end of the second World War, the movement focuses on functionality, simplicity and durability, with a pop of design flourish for added interest. As a result, it makes for a practical, casual yet highly attractive interior design style that has remained popular for decades!

Looking to create a space that screams Mid-Century Modern? Think sleek, functional furniture with geometric or organic shapes, highlight natural elements such as exposed beams or brickwork, experimenting with a variation of shape and materials. You can also incorporate pattern and color for some variety. Developments in material manufacturing such as plastics meant endless possibilities for decorative color scheme. Whether it be muted, pastel tones or neon hues, everything's on the table! Just be sure to complement the energy of the room.

While in regards to interior design the term Mid-Century Modern might conjure up a distinct image, this is not necessarily the case for Mid-Century Modern art. As the period spans from the 1940s to the late 1960s, Mid-Century Modern art can encompass a range of artistic movements including abstract expressionism, Pop Art and geometric abstraction. These art styles remain popular in Mid-Century Modern interior design schemes due to their focus on color, texture and shape.

Geometric abstraction in particular is frequently associated with the design movement for its celebration of pattern and shape, with artists such as Piet Mondrian and Max Bill being major influences. The vibrant works of iconic artists Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock, leaders of the Pop Art and abstract expressionism movements respectively, are also often viewed as sources of inspiration.

Today, artists continue to be inspired by these past Mid-Century Modern art movements. Venezuelan artist DAGOR's abstract pieces echo the visual language of modernity while incorporating a deeply contemporary geometry. Meanwhile, the Moroccon artist Said Ouarzaz draws clear influence from Pollock with his abstract expressionist paintings.
