Description
This portrait offers a contemporary approach to the female figure, viewed not as an idealized image but as a space of presence and tension. The face, depicted with closed eyes, withdraws from the viewer's gaze and establishes a relationship based on restraint rather than directness.
The pictorial treatment, marked by the visibility of gesture and material, reveals a process of construction and erasure. The layers of paint, the chromatic variations, and the areas of fragmentation convey an identity conceived as fluid, shaped by time and experience. Painting thus becomes a site for inscribing the senses.
As part of a broader reflection on portraiture, this work questions the modes of representing femininity in contemporary painting. It affirms an embodied, silent presence that eludes any univocal narrative and invites an open reading, attentive to the complexity of being.
Presentation
In the early 1990s, Jean-Michel Lourenço performed alongside rock bands: during their set, he painted on stretched canvases in a figurative style inspired by H.R. GIGER.
Himself a guitarist in several punk-rock groups for nearly 20 years, Jean-Michel Lourenço has always drawn his inspiration from music.
After a stint at the Beaux Arts in BESANCON, where he learned the different techniques of engraving, he began to paint canvases inspired by jazz and cinema.
He makes portraits in oil, stencil and also mixes the two techniques.
In a more Pop Art style, he creates canvases using torn posters.
Jean-Michel Lourenço also produced several frescoes adorning buildings in the town of VESOUL.
