Description
Standing at an impressive 195 cm tall, Matrix – The Germ Cell of Form is the monumental centerpiece of the series “System: Bodies in Becoming". The work takes up the vertical presence of the human body and translates it into an abstract, haptic cartography of emergence.
The narrow, vertical format resembles a stele of human evolution. The viewer is confronted with a complex layering reminiscent of biological structures, neural networks, and archaic blueprints. Fine, white lines stretch like nerve pathways across earthy textures and deep shadows, creating an enormous sense of spatial depth.
The artistic vision
In this work, the artist Christian Büffel explores the moment when structure emerges from amorphous chaos. The title "Matrix" (Latin for womb/mother animal) is programmatic: the image functions as a breeding ground upon which the "form" first takes shape.
Presentation
I paint to make inner states visible.
My abstract paintings emerge from the tension between control and surrender, structure and disruption, order and chaos. Through gestural lines, intense color, layered surfaces and a physical approach to materials, I transform emotional processes into visual spaces.
My work is not based on a fixed image or a predetermined narrative. Instead, I am interested in the moment when something shifts — when a structure begins to break, when chaos develops its own order, or when an image seems to exist between two states.
Influenced by Art Informel and Abstract Expressionism, I combine spontaneous gestures with deliberate composition. Paint, traces, scratches, fragments and layers remain visible as evidence of the process. The surface becomes a record of movement, tension and change.
For me, abstraction is not an escape from reality. It is a way of making what is usually invisible perceptible.
I live and work in Germany.
