Trip of the prodigal princess, 2023

Olga Vakhonina

The culminating part of the triptych. The central figure, the princess, is shown from behind. Her silhouette, in a lace cocktail dress with half-bared shoulders, is simultaneously fragile and majestic, symbolizing vulnerability, weariness from the journey, and determination. In the distance, part of an ancient castle stands in the darkness of the night, pierced by the bright beam of headlights. This is the clash of past and future, a symbol of hope. In the foreground, a woman in a formal suit contrasts with the princess, personifying order, expectation, or societal condemnation. The scene is permeated with a honeycomb mesh of barely discernible silhouettes of people, adding mystical depth and a sense of returning to the complex system of collective consciousness. The painting is imbued with sadness, timid joy, and mysticism. The black and white palette heightens the drama, focusing on symbols and unspoken feelings, making The Return a profound reflection on forgiveness, acceptance, and the price of freedom.
