Description
What if the sun could leave traces after disappearing?
In Echoes Beneath the Sun, Gaëlle Wagner imagines an impossible point of view: that of an immersed gaze, somewhere beneath the surface, observing the last vibrations of the sun.
The top of the canvas burns with orange, pink, and yellow. Then the light fractures, mixes with magenta and violet, before gradually sinking into deeper blues. The sunset is no longer a landscape: it becomes a suspended matter.
Thousands of projections, drops, and small explosions of color create an almost psychedelic space. One could see marine particles, microscopic organisms, an inverted constellation, or simply the debris of a sun that exploded beneath the surface.
Echoes — the echoes — are these persistences of light that continue to vibrate while the sun itself seems to move away.
The title also carries a musical resonance, like a piece lost between psychedelia and waking dream. A music without sound, built here with color.
In her work, Gaëlle Wagner develops a gestural painting based on projection, dripping, superposition, and chromatic density. Her series Abstractions Concrètes does not seek to reproduce the visible world, but to extract sensations from it: a light, a depth, a movement, an atmosphere.
Here, reality could be a sunset.
But the painting begins precisely where the landscape disappears.
Number 237 accompanies this idea as a discreet nod to the cycle: 2 + 3 + 7 = 12, like the hours that shift the day to night; and the 7, like the colors that compose and recompose the light.
The sun descends.
The color remains.
And somewhere beneath the surface, it continues to resonate.
Presentation
In the light of the Masters…
For lovers of art history, Gaëlle Wagner's work is part of the continuity of the great explorations of abstraction, from Monet to Klimt, from Pollock to Rothko. Nourished by this heritage, she develops a singular pictorial language, where composition, material, and color open up a renewed view of the sensible world.
In the Concrete Abstractions of Gaëlle Wagner, each work is born from a rigorously constructed composition made up of photographic fragments. This structure constitutes the foundation upon which the artist builds to develop her work. She progressively superimposes projections and runs to enrich the pictorial surface and gradually give it density. The artist conducts a deep reflection on pigment, color, light, and their interactions. Gravity and natural phenomena, which might seem to guide the painting, are integrated into this process without ever taking precedence over the artist's will.
Because, for Gaëlle Wagner, it is above all about building, through her technique, a sensory experience. The underlying structure of the work and its progressive enrichment become the guiding thread that accompanies the viewer towards a state of presence and attention.
Her approach is inspired by the way nature organizes its own forms. In a landscape, a rock, a sky, or a sea bottom, nothing exists in isolation: each element takes meaning through the relationships it maintains with the others. It is this logic of interdependence that the artist transposes into her painting. Colors are never thought of separately; they exist one for the other, building images that evoke horizons, mineral phenomena, or aquatic depths, without ever seeking to illustrate them, but rather to bring forth the memory, the impression, or the evocation.
Up close, the eye discovers the richness of the material, the nuances and interactions between the pigments. From a distance, these elements unite into a coherent image, where each part becomes indispensable to the balance of the whole.
This double reading is at the heart of her work. It invites the viewer to a sensory experience, between abstraction and reminiscence, where what nature reveals meets what it leaves suspended. The artist always works with purpose, guiding the gaze towards what she calls a Concrete Abstraction.
Presented in many personal and collective exhibitions, Gaëlle Wagner also creates live painting performances on monumental formats. Her works are now in private collections in France, Europe, and the United States.Reviews from our customers
