Description
The Scriptoglyphs occupy a singular place in the artistic universe of Jean-Jacques Marie. Created in 2023, this entirely personal pictorial writing is based on the spontaneous invention of signs that do not correspond to any alphabet and do not seek to convey any message. It is a writing that is not read, but observed and felt.
In this composition, a multitude of black strokes unfolds on a white background. The signs succeed each other, cross, and overlap, forming a teeming ensemble where the eye progressively discovers an astonishing diversity of forms. Some evoke human silhouettes, others seem to belong to a mysterious language whose meaning everyone can freely imagine.
The contrast of black and white gives all its strength to this creation. Without the intervention of color, attention is focused on the vitality of the line, the variety of signs, and the rhythm that is built through their accumulation. Despite its density, the composition maintains a remarkable visual coherence, between freedom of gesture and instinctive balance.
With its generous format of 70 × 97 cm and its affirmed graphic character, this work can become a strong element in a contemporary interior. Its timeless black and white allows it to be associated with very different atmospheres, from sleek spaces to warmer settings, while bringing an original artistic presence.
Through the Scriptoglyphs, Jean-Jacques Marie invites one to discover a form of expression where writing breaks free from words to become a plastic creation in its own right. A work whose richness does not exhaust itself at first glance and which leaves everyone the freedom of their own interpretations.
Presentation
Jean-Jacques Marie is an artist whose atypical and passionate career reflects a relentless quest for new forms of expression. Born in 1949 in the Paris region, he initially distanced himself from his passion for art, yielding to social pressures that guided him towards a more conventional life. At the age of forty, however, he decided to devote himself fully to his vocation, beginning a creative journey marked by experimentation, self-taught work and a profound transformation of his artistic approach.
Exploring various mediums, including Chinese ink, he discovered avant-garde Asian abstraction, which redefined his art. This evolution led him from figurative to a lyrical and vibrant abstraction. He then developed a unique technique, "Projected Abstraction", where the paint is projected vertically onto textured backgrounds, giving his works a visual and tactile dynamic, close to action painting through its frenetic and expressive gestures.
This metamorphosis marks a reinvention of his artistic vision, where each work becomes a projection of his unconscious. For Jean-Jacques Marie, abstraction goes beyond the simple final result to become a creative process freed from any figurative constraint. His works reflect a deep introspection, combining spontaneity and technical mastery to directly touch the viewer's soul.
Today, he continues to explore the boundaries of abstraction with an insatiable curiosity, affirming that his artistic journey is far from over. His approach, rooted in a reflection on the language of color and form, remains a perpetual quest for balance between order and chaos, between control and letting go. Each work represents a new step in this journey, a window opened onto the depths of his inner universe.
Jean-Jacques Marie is represented by the Galerie Hurtebize (Cannes).
