Description
There are works that are appreciated at first glance, and others that make one want to approach, linger, and constantly discover new details. This creation by Jean-Jacques Marie belongs to the second category.
On a delicately worked gray background, a multitude of small black signs, similar to moving silhouettes, unfold with astonishing freedom. Some seem to be dancing, others running, launching themselves or simply crossing the space. In the center, an interlace of brown lines draws a luminous and moving area, while fine white silhouettes reveal themselves more discreetly through the composition.
The gaze circulates from one form to another, discovers unexpected connections, imagines encounters and stories. This is all the charm of the Scriptoglyphs, this pictorial writing invented by Jean-Jacques Marie in 2023: signs that are not read, but that open up an infinite space to the imagination.
The beauty of this work also lies in its particularly refined palette. The nuanced grays, the deep blacks, the delicate whites, and the touches of brown compose a soft and warm harmony. The whole possesses an affirmed graphic presence, without ever being overwhelming.
With its size of 60 × 73 cm, this painting is ideal for adding character to a living room, dressing the wall of a bedroom, or bringing an original artistic touch to an office. Its natural tones go just as well with wood, linen, and warm materials as with contemporary furniture with clean lines.
It is above all a work that one enjoys rediscovering every day. From a distance, one appreciates its balance and the elegance of its colors; up close, one is surprised by the fantasy of its countless small figures. A painting full of life, poetry, and mystery, which retains its entire capacity to awaken curiosity over time.
Presentation
Jean-Jacques Marie is an artist whose atypical and passionate career reflects a relentless quest for new forms of expression. Born in 1949 in the Paris region, he initially distanced himself from his passion for art, yielding to social pressures that guided him towards a more conventional life. At the age of forty, however, he decided to devote himself fully to his vocation, beginning a creative journey marked by experimentation, self-taught work and a profound transformation of his artistic approach.
Exploring various mediums, including Chinese ink, he discovered avant-garde Asian abstraction, which redefined his art. This evolution led him from figurative to a lyrical and vibrant abstraction. He then developed a unique technique, "Projected Abstraction", where the paint is projected vertically onto textured backgrounds, giving his works a visual and tactile dynamic, close to action painting through its frenetic and expressive gestures.
This metamorphosis marks a reinvention of his artistic vision, where each work becomes a projection of his unconscious. For Jean-Jacques Marie, abstraction goes beyond the simple final result to become a creative process freed from any figurative constraint. His works reflect a deep introspection, combining spontaneity and technical mastery to directly touch the viewer's soul.
Today, he continues to explore the boundaries of abstraction with an insatiable curiosity, affirming that his artistic journey is far from over. His approach, rooted in a reflection on the language of color and form, remains a perpetual quest for balance between order and chaos, between control and letting go. Each work represents a new step in this journey, a window opened onto the depths of his inner universe.
Jean-Jacques Marie is represented by the Galerie Hurtebize (Cannes).
