Description

Plato con Granadas (Plate with Pomegranates) is a 2005 screenprint with acrylic and hand-colouring on wood by Juan Fernández, a Spanish painter and printmaker whose still lifes and floral subjects are a constant in his collaboration with Taller del Prado, which published the work. Seen from above, a blue-and-white porcelain plate decorated with floral motifs holds whole and split pomegranates and a leafy branch, while more fruits, some broken open to reveal their ruby seeds, and a scattering of loose seeds lie on a table covered with a mottled cloth in peach, cream and pink. Faint circular traces, like the rings left by glasses, appear on the cloth, and a band of deep blue at the right and along the bottom frames the scene like the edge of the table. The pomegranate, an ancient symbol of fertility and abundance, has a long history in the Spanish still life, and Fernández renders its colours and textures with evident pleasure. The combination of screenprint, acrylic and hand-colouring gives each impression a painterly surface, and the wooden support lends it the presence of a small panel painting. The edition comprises 125 impressions, numbered and hand-signed by the artist, plus 12 artist's proofs.

Presentation

Juan Fernández González (born 1950 in Ayamonte, Huelva) is a figurative painter in a realist style. Drawn to drawing and colour from an early age, he painted his first oil at fourteen and continued as a self-taught painter, winning prizes in competitions that encouraged him to carry on. He held his first solo exhibitions at the Parador de Turismo in Ayamonte and in Huelva galleries, and in the mid-1970s Madrid galleries such as Kreisler, Héller and Gavar began to show his work. He then moved to Madrid and graduated in Fine Arts, specialising in printmaking, from the Complutense University. He taught for 12 years at the Taller del Prado in Madrid before dedicating himself fully to painting. Since 1980 he has lived and worked in a studio-home in the heart of Madrid, shared with a studio in his hometown of Ayamonte. Forged in the figurative tradition, he finds his subjects in careful observation of the world around him, and his paintings of water, reflections, fountains and urban landscapes convey a close realism with a subjective dimension; careful brushwork and rigorous drawing define his style, in which light and colour are fundamental. He has held more than 80 solo exhibitions in galleries in Spain and abroad and has taken part in more than 500 group exhibitions, including competitions and art fairs. He has won more than 25 national and international painting prizes. His work is in museums, official bodies and private collections, and he has an extensive bibliography in dictionaries, encyclopaedias, art magazines and the press.
