Description
This monochrome portrait plays on the strong contrasts of black and white. The style is inspired by Pop Art with a graphic and clean approach. A central figure, Amélie (Poulain) Poulet, with stylized features and pronounced glasses, absorbs the reading of an open book. Beside her, a small bearded character brings a narrative and unusual touch to the scene.
The artist uses a precise printmaking technique. The treatment of black solid areas creates a velvety, almost nocturnal atmosphere. A lamp and a bottle of wine suggest a moment of domestic calm.
The choice of paper is essential. Imported from Asia, this natural support offers an organic texture that softens the rigor of the line. The composition balances sobriety and humor.
This print is part of a series of 40 copies. It is a limited edition made in 2026. The work is distinguished by its frontal composition and tight framing.
Presentation
Philippe Achermann was born in the South of France, and came to Paris for studying Japanese. He leaves Paris to settle down in Japan in 1994 for five years, and creates his own woodcuts, as small as matches boxes. Back in France, he continues his discovery of wood engravings at Beaux Arts de Paris School. He realises bigger etchings playing with supports. With a certain tast for simplicity and sobriety, he chooses his own paper, exported from Japan and China to give a natural way for his artworks. Till now, his works are monochromes as well as inspired by animal world, by daily life "clichés", vanities, etc.
