Description
Screenprint on paper with hand intervention in red pencil, 2004, from the Animados series. Sheet 100 × 70 cm, from an edition of twenty-five, signed and numbered in pencil by the artist.
The Animados works were conceived in pairs: a cast bronze and a large screenprint of the same subject, gone over by hand so that no two impressions are identical. The red pencil is not decoration but correction — the draughtsman reasserting himself over the mechanical flatness of the screen.
Bellver (Madrid, 1954) learned etching at Dimitri Papageorgiu's Madrid workshop, co-founded Taller Mayor 28 in 1981, held fellowships in Oslo and Rome, and received the Premio Nacional de Arte Gráfico in 2008. His method is recycling: classical statuary, cartoon figures and commercial imagery set side by side. The torso — fragment and museum cliché — is an apt subject.
