Description
An original print issued in an edition of ninety-two copies. Lucio Muñoz (1929-1998) was the artist who took the informalist impulse of the 1950s furthest into the material itself, abandoning canvas for worked wood, which he carved, burnt, gouged and stained until the support carried the entire pictorial event; his monumental altarpiece for the Basilica of Aránzazu, completed in 1962, remains the largest statement of that method. The title of this sheet, addressed to the use of navigators, invokes the chart and the sailing manual, documents that describe a surface in order that it may be crossed, and the analogy with Muñoz's practice of reading a wooden plane for its grain, knots and faults is exact. The sequence number indicates a series. The sheet measures 65.5 by 50.5 centimetres. Muñoz received the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas in 1998, the year of his death, and is held by the Museo Reina Sofía.
