Description
Dated 1979 and issued in an edition of fifty copies, this sheet belongs to the graphic work of Josep Guinovart (1927-2007). The title, contracting the artist's own name into a serial designation, indicates a numbered sequence rather than a described subject, a device consistent with a practice in which the physical event of the work matters more than its nomination. Guinovart came out of the Catalan post-war generation and, unlike the Barcelona painters who moved toward a contemplative informalism, kept his work bound to the rural material world: straw, earth, sacking, burnt wood and maize husks entered the surface directly, and the landscape of Agramunt, where the Espai Guinovart opened in 1994, remained the constant reference. His printmaking translates that physicality through heavy inking, embossing and collage. The sheet measures 50 by 38 centimetres. Guinovart received the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas in 1982 and the Creu de Sant Jordi in 1989.
Presentation
After studying at the school of Decorative Arts of Barcelona and his first exhibition in 1948, he won a scholarship in 1953 from the French Institute to study in Paris for five months. On his return to Barcelona, he began creating some abstract artwork resembling a collage. In the 60s, his work took a political perspective. The artist was actively involved in the anti-Franco movement and made many propaganda posters for this cause.
In the 70s, he started creating some unconventional pieces with the constant use of three-dimensional elements, mostly on large scale. He shows through his work that the categories "realism" and "asbtract" are outdated today.
In 1994, a museum dedicated to his work was inaugurated in Agramunt, the town where his mother was born and to which he has always been specially attached.
He died December 2007 at age 80 after a stroke.
