Description
Dated 2002, this etching with aquatint and chine-collé belongs to the series From Cranach to Lichtenstein, published in an edition of twenty-five copies with five artist's proofs and fifteen hors commerce, numbered and signed by hand. The plate measures 32.2 by 24.4 centimetres on a sheet of 50 by 40. Manolo Valdés, born in Valencia in 1942, founded Equipo Crónica in 1964 with Rafael Solbes and Juan Antonio Toledo, a collective that dismantled the canon of Spanish painting by recombining Velázquez and Goya with the visual language of Pop; after Solbes's death in 1981 Valdés continued alone, and moved to New York in 1989. The title of this series states his method exactly: the history of European portraiture treated as a repertoire of available images, from a sixteenth-century German court painter to an American who had himself made a career of quotation. Valdés received the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas in 1983.
