Description
Dated 2021 and issued in an edition of seventy-five copies, this sheet belongs to the late work of Luis Gordillo, born in Seville in 1934 and among the most consequential Spanish painters of the second half of the twentieth century. Gordillo studied law before turning to painting, spent formative years in Paris at the end of the 1950s, and after a period of psychological crisis arrived in the mid-1960s at the language that made him decisive for successive Spanish generations: a proliferating, self-replicating organic form, acid colour, and a compositional method built on serial repetition, photocopying and the recombination of his own earlier images. His practice anticipated by decades the digital logic of the copy and the variation. The vertical sheet measures 57.5 by 42 centimetres. Gordillo received the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas in 1981 and the Premio Velázquez in 2007; the Museo Reina Sofía and the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo hold his work.
Presentation
Initially he studied law before changing his vocation to finally opt for a training in Fine Arts in Seville, following this he moved to Paris in 1950, where he rubbed shoulders with avant-garde leading figures.
His career cadenced with well-defined periods, he was part of the informal art movement along with other artists like Antoni Tàpies, Jean Dubuffet or even Jean Fautrier and was considered as one of the most important Spanish interpreters of pop art in the 60's.
He gradually develops an interest for psychoanalysis and incorporates the interest for these thoughtful meanings, studying the link between the world experience and aesthetic expression. One of the most unique contributions of Gordillo in contemporary art was the definition of chromatic strategies, inspired by the contemporary urban phenomena. In this sense, his work is a lot like documentary photography and popular cultures linked to graphic design.
He is one of the leading figures of abstract art in Spain, and his work has been exhibited at several personal and collective exhibitions such as the one organized at the Museum of Art in Zapotán, Mexico by the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo of Seville, but also the retrospective of his pictorial and photographic work which was dedicated to him by the National Museum of Reina Sofía in Madrid in 2007, where Gordillo himself directed the conceptual organization of the exhibition.
