Frederic Lloveras

This untitled lithograph by Frederic Lloveras (Barcelona, 1912–1983), a Catalan painter and printmaker, depicts a summer beach on the Mediterranean in a bright, lively style. Under a deep blue sky streaked with white, a calm bay of turquoise water stretches towards a rocky headland crowned by a tower and fortifications, with a white town of cubic houses climbing the hills at the right; small sailing boats dot the water. In the foreground the sand is crowded with holidaymakers: sunbathers lying on towels, figures in swimsuits, striped deckchairs and a colourful array of parasols in red, white, blue and yellow. Lloveras draws with a quick, confident line and lays the colour in transparent, lightly brushed areas, so that the whole sheet seems flooded with light. The scene belongs to the long Catalan tradition of painting the coast and its leisure, and conveys the carefree atmosphere of the summer holiday. The image is printed on Arches vellum with wide margins. The edition comprises 300 impressions, numbered and hand-signed by the artist. Given its age, the sheet may show some spots and signs of ageing.
