Description
This ink on paper pamphlet asserts itself through a radical contrast. Deep black dominates the space. It outlines urban and vegetal silhouettes. Palm trees stand facing geometric buildings. The whole forms a fragmented visual narrative.
The line is precise. It describes scenes of tension. Mechanical forms emerge from the shadow. White brings a harsh light. It emphasizes the vulnerability of places and beings. Each fold of the support paces the reading of the image.
The figurative approach serves a historical and political message here. The drawing explores the themes of confinement and displacement. The composition guides the eye through a landscape marked by conflict. The economy of means reinforces the clarity of the message.
This 2025 realization testifies to a technical mastery of ink drawing. The accordion structure transforms the work into a spatial testimony. The final rendering oscillates between documentary and expressionism. White and black confront each other across the entire length of the paper.
Presentation
Maisara Baroud is a Palestinian artist whose practice explores war, displacement, confinement, and the human experience of living through conflict. Working primarily through painting and drawing, he often depicts figures and environments marked by tension, vulnerability, and uncertainty. His use of black and white creates strong contrasts of light and shadow, allowing gesture, expression, and atmosphere to become central elements of his work.
Born in Gaza in 1976, Baroud received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Al-Najah National University in Nablus in 1998 and later completed a Master of Fine Arts at the College of Fine Arts in Zamalek, Cairo, in 2011. He has also worked as an educator at Al-Aqsa University in Gaza, alongside his artistic practice. His experience of living and working in Gaza has informed his engagement with themes of war, displacement, and survival, which appear throughout his work. Baroud has exhibited widely in Palestine and internationally and continues to develop his artistic practice until today from his art studio in Marseille, France.
