Serie “Feline Sketches Chronicles : Luminous Legends".

“UrbanCat Gleam: Cityscape Light Sketch," a mesmerizing piece by the renowned Japanese artist Hiro Ando, stands as a captivating embodiment of the urban zeitgeist in his “Feline Sketches Chronicles: Luminous Legends" series. One can delve into the profound narrative and psychological layers that Ando weaves into this artwork.
The sculpture, a stunning rendition of Ando's iconic Urbancat, is masterfully crafted to resemble a sketch brought to life in three dimensions. Utilizing plexiglass as his canvas, Ando challenges the conventional boundaries of sculpture and drawing. The Urbancat, traditionally a symbol of agility and adaptability, is reimagined against the backdrop of an ever-changing urban landscape, illuminated by the subtle yet impactful use of LED lighting.
In “UrbanCat Gleam: Cityscape Light Sketch," the Urbancat is not just a character; it's a representation of the urban dweller's psyche. The plexiglass medium, with its resilience, symbolizes the clarity and strength needed to navigate the complexities of city life. The LED lights, interwoven within the sculpture, do more than illuminate; they create a dynamic interplay of shadows and highlights, mirroring the fluctuating rhythm of urban existence.
The artwork tells a story of survival and adaptation. The Urbancat's poised, alert stance, coupled with the vibrant glow of the LED lights, encapsulates the essence of living in a modern metropolis – the constant state of awareness, the allure of city lights, and the underlying energy that fuels the urban spirit. The LED lights, changing in intensity and color, reflect the diverse experiences and emotional tapestry of city life, from the pulsating energy of daytime to the introspective calm of night.
As viewers engage with “UrbanCat Gleam," they are invited to reflect on their own experiences within the urban jungle. The artwork becomes a mirror, reflecting the viewer's inner thoughts and feelings about city life – its challenges, its beauty, and its unceasing motion.
In the broader context of the “Feline Sketches Chronicles: Luminous Legends" series, this piece stands as a testament to Ando's skill in capturing the essence of contemporary life through his unique fusion of traditional themes and innovative techniques. “UrbanCat Gleam: Cityscape Light Sketch" is not just a visual spectacle; it's a psychological journey into the heart of urban living, encapsulating the spirit of adaptability and resilience that defines the modern city dweller.

Hiro Ando

Hiro Ando

Japan  • 1973

Emerging artists

Hiro Ando was born in 1973 on the island of Shikoku in Japan. Hiro Ando started his career as an illustrator in 1995. In 2005 he founded with Saori Nakamishi an artist studio in Tokyo to manage the creation and promotion of other young neo-pop artists who express their own popular culture in their creations. Today the studio "Crazynoodles" has ten artists.

Hiro Ando is a versatile artist. He works in oil on canvas, digital media or video. His technique consists of making several sketches before painting on canvas. The painting shapes itself and emerges in the streets of Tokyo at night, and combines lots of colors and graphics. Hiro paints dark cityscapes and goldfish all over the canvas.

The marriage of the two subjects makes the whole of the painting dynamic and violent, with a strange feeling of eternity given by the goldfish which recall old Japanese paintings and watercolors. The sculpture is a recent addition to the media used by Ando, who started working on a series of orange, green sculptures ... inspired by Japanese popular culture. Thus the cat, which is a lucky charm in Japan, like the Maneki-Neko, takes different forms such as the samurai or the sumo wrestler.

The artist translates this theme into a modern style. The shiny and smooth materials, the vivid colors, the brutal but rounded shapes of Hiro Ando's sculptures take us to the world of manga in which the artist's generation grew up. Hiro Ando's art is the meeting between the Meiji era and Manga, he is Shogun in the world of Pokemon, he is traditional Japan seen through the eyes of young people: he certainly belongs to Japanese neo pop art.
