The Virtual Gallery Natalia Gomendio presents its second online exhibition: "Art and Science" with works by the Spanish artist Gonzalo Páramo (Burgos 1971), BA Fine Arts, Salamanca University (Spain), MA University of Kent at Canterbury (UK).
Páramo has conducted numerous artist residencies and exhibitions in different pats of the world, from Madrid,
Glasgow, Jeddah, London, Saint Louis, to Crete, Tokyo and other places. It should be especially noted his artistic residency at the prestigious Wellcome Trust in London, which allowed him privileged access to their scientists enabling him to develop work combining aspects of both real science and art. Science and art are often linked in the work of Gonzalo Páramo, in that one can see the exploration of the natural and scientific realms giving an experimental investigative character to his oeuvre. In the production of the pieces one can frequently observe intrinsically zoological subjects as the creative inspiration.
This exhibition presents both recent and other older works taking us to the micro and macro cosmos; of
elements that recall cells, molecules and other shapes in microscopic life, to others recalling planets and galaxies. One notes the close attention to detail to the abstract pieces as well as the more figurative works. Frequently incorporated is the leitmotif of an individual inverted calligraphy (his own), whose lines run from right to left, as if reflected in a mirror; sometimes similar to topographic contour lines or even geological strata. Páramo's meticulous attention to detail evokes curiosity, mystery, and the complex versatility of nature. Páramo is an artist that rarely leaves the observer indifferent: one feels the artist exploring his deep admiration and respect for both Science and Nature.
Much of his more recent production, in which he employs inks, acrylics, collage and linen threads, is made on heavy paper. These works can be exhibited in two dimensions (as paintings or wall hangings), as well as articulated to give interesting organic three-dimensional sculptures. In this exhibition however, the works are shown only in two dimensions.
