Presentation

The sculptor Barry Flanagan was born in 1941 in Prestalyn in the UK and died in 2009 in Ibiza. He studied at the Central Saint Martin’s School of Art, where he later taught in 1960.

Barry Flanagan bucked the trend of the rather minimalist trends in sculpture in the 1980s. The Welsh artist was interested in theatre and installation. He created animals, particularly his famous slender goats. He didn’t choose them at random: he liked to express himself using an animal which has been given so many different meanings - life, immortality...

He worked with organic materials which he gave imaginary fates. His artwork often includes humorous touches, particularly when it comes to titles. « The Horse of San Marco » exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, for which the sculptor was inspired by Greek and Roman casting techniques, was a revelation within the art world. The authenticity of the materials perfectly conveyed the Man/Animal relationship as seen by Barry Flanagan.

Several institutions wanted to share his artwork: the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1974, the Tate Gallery in Liverpool in 2000... He represented the UK at the Venice Biennale in 1982.
