Mary Helen graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1943 with a degree in creative writing. In 1949, she began her artistic career in ceramics studying under Alex McKenzie. She moved onto weaving and then painting which she studied with Mac Le Sueur. In the 1960's, she began taking classes in collage with Hugh Kappel and found she loved this particular medium. Her collage work became focused on paper montage. She exhibited all through the Midwest and Eastern part of the U.S. and won numerous awards. Her pieces also hang in permanent museum and corporate collections.
