Born 1929 in Brooklyn, New York, Leonard Freed worked as a freelance photographer from 1961 onwards. Magnum photographer Freed traveled widely, photographing African Americans in America (1964-65), events in Israel (1967-68, 1973), and the New York City police department (1972-79). Freed's coverage of the American civil rights movement made him famous, but he also produced photo essays on New York (Harlem), the Italians (Italy), and Germany.
Leonard Freed died in 2006.
