Andy Warhol: Self-Portraits

Andy Warhol is an artist who needs no introduction. The artist pioneered the Pop Art movement and remains a major influence in both the art world and popular culture in general. His signature prints are some of the most recognizable on the planet and his work continues to inspire generations of artists today.

Warhol's series of self-portraits were a sharp departure from his usual work, in the sense that they avoided the overtly flashy and garish images of celebrity and consumerism. Instead they were a much more intimate and vulnerable collection of artworks, taken during a period where the artist was becoming much more aware of the possibility of his death. Created between 1964 and 1987, the portraits capture Warhol's transformation from a rising star to an aging man who is recognizing his impending mortality. His last set of self-portraits, aptly named Six Self-Portraits, were taken just months before his death. They bear witness to an ashen and emaciated Warhol whose haunting stare pierces the viewer. These self-portraits are so poignant that they are extremely sought after by collectors and museums alike, with Six Self-Portraits being sold for $31 million at Sotheby's in 2018.
