De Stijl, translated as “The Style", was aDutchartistic movement that was active from 1917 until the 1930s. Also known as “Neoplasticism," the movement consisted of architects and artists. The style is characterized by pureabstraction, leaving only the essential elements of form and color. Paintings therefore often represented horizontal and vertical lines, using black, white and primarycolors. Some of the principal members of De Stijl includePiet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, Bart van der Leck and Gerrit Rietveld.
De Stijl was active as an artistic and design movement at the same time as Kasimir Malevich's suprematism and the Bauhaus style, and similarities can be drawn between each of these movements in their use of abstraction. Primary colors and straight lines were often employed by artists from these movements, and these visual elements were intensified and further restricted by the artists of De Stijl.
