Der Blaue Reiter
Remembered for its symbolic remodeling of Expressionism, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) was an artistic association which emerged in Munich, Germany in the 20th century. Spearheaded by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, the group predominantly explored the use of vibrant hues and abstract forms to convey a broad range of emotions and ideas. Indeed, Der Blaue Reiter sought to honor the spiritual, and somewhat mystical, value of non-objective art.
The specific origin of Der Blaue Reiter can be traced back to 1911, when the group's almanac was published by its two leaders. One of the key features of the Der Blaue Reiter movement was its commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, with artists, poets, musicians, and writers all coming to create a vibrant and dynamic creative community. However, Der Blaue Reiter came to an abrupt end at the dawn of the First World War, during which several leaders of the movement were deported to their native Russia and others drafted to the German army.
Today, the legacy of the group lives on in the minds of Avant-Garde and Expressionism enthusiasts around the world. Discover our selection of works which hark to this unique 20th century style.
