Digital Print
Digital printing is a printing method that requires a digital-based image electronic file. It can be done with a computer, digital storage devices, and a variety of media. The printing process takes, for example, a PDF file, and transmits it straight to a digital print. As opposed to other forms of printing, digital printing does not require a press plate or set up sheets to transfer images. Because of this, digital printing is known for lower production costs and has replaced other forms of printing, such as lithography, throughout many industries.
Despite this, it is important to note that digital printing results in a higher cost per page than traditional printing methods. Digital printing allows users to print on demand and in a short amount of time. It is known that it is possible to modify images used for the impressions. This printing process also requires less labor. Because of this, digital printing is able to produce large quantities of prints for a fraction of the cost.
The most noticeable difference between analog printing (lithography, etching, letterpress, flexography) and digital printing is the printing plate. In analog printing, it is absolutely necessary to replace the printing plates repeatedly. Whereas with digital printing, this element doesn't exist, allowing a faster turnaround time to print large quantities. However, it is important to note that although faster and less costly, commercial digital printing struggles when it comes to presenting minute details.
Some of the most sought-after forms of digital printers include laser and inkjet printers. These printers deposit ink, pigment, and toner onto various materials, such as canvas, paper, metal, glass, and marble. Since the 1980s, many artists have turned to digital printing as a technique in their artistic process. Discover artworks that incorporate digital printing in an exciting collection of works!
