Artist Statement:
My constant search for subjects to photograph leads me to many interesting places. Whether it's going to a predetermined location to find a particular type of subject for an ongoing series, or traveling in search of inspiration from places and things I discover, looking at the world at searching for materials for my photographic ideas is a constant quest. In my opinion.
Most of my work is “personal documentary" where the subject is a starting point to look at and find visually appealing and evocative images. It is the visual qualities that initially attract me to photograph a subject. Implied meanings add meaning at the personal and objective levels.
For me, images represent a beauty of their own, based on the purely visual sensations of the photos. Whether the scene is “found" or set up, the colors and textures, shapes and composition, the spaces of view that open up before me are my initial fascination.
On another level, associations with the subject and the thoughts they may evoke add additional depth and dimension After exploring the visual elements of these images, my imagination is stimulated to wonder about the history, associations, and meanings, objective or subjective, that are implied or revealed.
While shooting on film, I print digitally these days The quality and longevity of inkjet materials has reached a level matching traditional darkroom printing, while the nature of the digital printing process m allowed me to perfect my prints to a level that time would not allow with a "wet" printing process.
I am influenced by obsessively looking at things and places, as well as finding inspiration by looking at other people's photographs and artwork. Listening to music, paying attention to the world, media, popular culture, and my own personal experiences combine to inform and evolve my personal vision and ideas.
