The night has inspired artists for centuries, a mysterious and fascinating subject full of profound concepts and ideas. The enchanting nature of the moon has often been personified as feminine. As the sun sets and the sky darkens, a myriad of stars fill the sky, punctuating the darkness with tiny luminous dots that sparkle for eternity. However it's not only night owls that appreciate the stars and night sky, this phenomenon literally guides our daily lives, and is an endless source of inspiration for artists.
Artists haven't stopped observing and learning how to depict the night sky in their works. Amongst them is French photographer, Roger Schall, who thrived during the outbreak of the Leica and Rolleiflex cameras in the late 20s. A contemporary of Doisneau, Brassai and even Cartier-Bresson, Schall's fly-on-the-wall technique rapidly gained him recognition and attention from the biggest newspaper editors. His little photography studio transformed into a an authentic photography agency, and went on to have his work printed in magazines across the globe. Waiting until the sun had set, Paris at night became his favourite subject. Adopting a neutral perspective, he let his device loose on the city; capturing forgotten alleyways, shops, and monuments, immortalising the Parisian nighttime in a photograph.
Artsper and its partner galeries have selected the most beautiful nocturnal works for you. So before going to bed, during an all-nighter, at midnight or at sunrise; explore the unlimited boundaries of night and day.
