Presentation

Born in Strasbourg, Grégoire Simon, evolves in Nantes, and makes his first steps as a cook at only 15 years old. Trained at the Palais de l'Elysée while competing for the Best Apprentice of France, from the kitchens of the Atlantide under the direction of chef Jean-Yves Guého to those of the Burgundy via the Maison Hebel, this self-taught man follows the rules of excellence and exigency, discovering a means of expressing his creativity, and thus an object of frustration and narrow pleasures. Precision of lines, association of colors and pigments, awakening of the senses, harmony of paradoxes, Gregoire observes, learns, reproduces, innovates. On December 28, 2013, he celebrates his 20th birthday. Alone, he puts his first strokes on a canvas, without really believing, without really knowing, and draws a new line that looks like a bend, which will dictate the meaning of his life.

From his first stay in Paris, he keeps the memory of a cramped, nomadic life. A friend gave him a drawing book to make up for the lack of space in his small studio in the 15th arrondissement. With this treasure in hand, he bought his first ticket to an exhibition, Zeng Fanzhi, on January 14, 2014 at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. Virgin of any artistic culture, he lives his first emotions in the figurative and penetrates the world of art, and, in only 2 months, Gregoire becomes a painter. Two brushes to start with, oil paint because "if you have to start, you might as well do it with the most complicated", portraits and then nudes, the features become more refined, more assertive, and Grégoire signs Sineau, definitively uniting his father and his mother. 6 paintings per month, a promising rhythm, but one that he considers insufficient.

As if inhabited by an unspeakable force, he soon devotes all his free time, returns to Nantes to set up a studio on rue Joffre, and organizes his life around his art. The paintings cover the walls of his apartment, and soon those of his relatives. By candlelight, intoxicated by the smell of oil and gasoline fumes, many people venture into this makeshift studio, described as a haven of peace. When money is tight, Gregoire takes down his canvases, and stretches new ones on his sturdy frames. When money is tight, Gregoire takes his pastels and dresses walls and sidewalks with his luminous shadows. In 2018, he left the kitchens of the city of the Dukes for good to join Paris with a single objective: to become a full-time artist and thereby meet his public.

Self-taught, he wishes to remain so. From academism, he keeps his years as a young cook. Today, as a painter, it is a new approach, more frightening and yet assured, that gives rhythm to his daily life. He has confidence in the future. Determined to learn through work and technique that he puts to the test of his mistakes, "it is by making mistakes that I learn best" he is often heard to say, feeding on the philosophy of Immanuel Kant or well Michel Serres, observing the society that surrounds him, questioning individual existence and its place in the community, reality and reality, love and lovelessness, life and its end, he makes his art evolve according to his emotions.

In October 2019, it is in a gallery in the Marais (Galerie Escougnou), at 7 Rue Saint-Claude, that Grégoire Sineau unveiled his paintings for the first time in a temporary exhibition entitled BRUT. After his participation in a Group Show promoted by the Galerie Odile Ouizeman from December 12, 2019 to January 12, 2020 "Un Joyeux Noël DésorDONné", we found him for a new performance at the Palais Vivienne. Soon, it is in Berlin that we will find him for an exhibition BERLIN LARGE SIZE.

Only six years separate us from that night of December 28, and yet it is today a retrospective of 3 cycles, counting 300 paintings, sketches and sculptures that Gregoire Sineau offers to discover.
