French photographer Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard was born in 1971 in Paris.
In 1976, her parents offered her for Christmas her first camera. 20 years later, Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard decided to be a photographer and took her first photo of fish.
Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard is an artist in the lineage of the authors of fables from the 18th century. As La Fontaine, she recreates the world according to her own universe. She creates models in which the characters are fish dressed in costumes that she makes herself, in a decor that she makes too. Then, through photography, she creates a dreamlike world, both funny and scary, reproducing the faults and the absurdity of our consumer society.
But everyone is asking a question: Why the fish? Why not other animals? Her fish scenes surprise, fascinate and speak immediately and directly to everyone. Is it because men come from fish? Does that create a proximity and a feeling at the same time symbolic and reassuring, but also extremely strange?
For this long and meticulous work, she uses literary or cinematographic references. In a phantasmagoric world, with handmade props that sometimes take several months to build, she stages dead fish to which she gives a new life but also new expressions.
