Biography

Peter Howson OBE is a Scottish painter born in 1958 in London and brought up in Scotland. Known for his religious themes and emotive figures, Howton was raised in a religious family and painted his first painting, depicting a Crucifixion, at the age of six, later following his artistic passion to the Glasgow School of Art in the late 70s.

In 1993, Peter was commissioned to be England’s official war artist for the Bosnian war, and later the Kosovo war, during which he painted graphic, shocking depictions of the atrocities that were occurring. After being treated for drug and alcohol addiction in 2000, Howson delved back into his religious past and converted to Christianity, his artistic vision shifting to more biblical imagery.

He gained greater exposure designing a Millenium postage stamp celebrating British engineering achievements, as well as album cover designs and was later awarded an OBE in 2009.
