Biography
Jim Perry (b. 1947, New York) is an American sculptor known for his abstract laminated wood sculptures that explore the tension between movement and stillness. He earned a degree in sculpture from Bard College in 1971 and began his artistic career in New York in the 1970s. His early recognition came with his inclusion in the 1975 Whitney Biennial, a major milestone in contemporary art.
Perry's sculptures are built from layered wood, shaped into flowing curves and twisted forms inspired by natural and mathematical geometries, such as spirals and parabolas. His accumulative technique involves stacking and carving wood to create fluid, organic structures that reveal the interaction between space and material essence.
He has held solo exhibitions at venues including Calloway Fine Art & Consulting (Washington, DC, 2018), the Center for Contemporary Art (Bedminster, NJ, 2016), and Gremillion & Company Fine Art (Houston, TX, 2011, 2013, 2017). His work has also appeared in group shows at institutions such as the New Jersey State Museum, the Noyes Museum of Art, and the Morris Museum.
Jim Perry is represented by several galleries, including Calloway Fine Art, James Gallery, Trimper Gallery, and Westbrook Modern. He currently maintains studios in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and his sculptures are part of prominent private, corporate, and public collections across the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
