Biography
Joel Morrison is a Los Angeles-based sculptor known for his futuristic, high-polish stainless steel sculptures. Born in Seattle in 1976, Morrison studied English Literature at Central Washington University and earned his MFA in Sculpture at Claremont Graduate University. He transforms everyday objects—like bubble wrap, plastic bottles, and shopping carts—into bold composite forms that blend Pop Art, Surrealism, and Classicism.
Morrison's sculptures are striking for their mirror-like surfaces and conceptual depth. Using advanced casting techniques, he incorporates items like neck braces, bullets, and weather balloons into dynamic forms, ranging from neo-classical busts to grotesque, abstract shapes. His work explores themes of consumerism, humor, and art history, often referencing icons like Frank Stella while inviting viewers to reflect on distorted modern realities.
His work has been exhibited internationally, including solo shows at Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills, New York, and Hong Kong. He was featured in the California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art and exhibited at institutions like the Hammer Museum, Haus Am Waldsee, and Santa Monica Museum of Art. Morrison's sculptures are held in prominent public and private collections worldwide, solidifying his place in the contemporary art scene.
