Interior of Marlene Zeiner Borthen's Olso home

Take a tour around interior designer, stylist and blogger Marlene Zeiner Borthen's Oslo home. With Artsper discover her art and design inspirations, her interior design tips and explore her twist on classic Scandinavian interiors...

1. Hello Marlene! You are both an interior designer and a founder of a blog and Instagram page, which are dedicated to sharing the work of artists and designers who inspire you. What motivated you to create these pages?

Hi! Regarding Instagram, it started with me saving every other interior design post on Instagram. When I had almost 300 images saved, I decided to make my own Instagram page where I also share these images as an archive of inspiration for both myself and others. Instagram is a great platform for sourcing inspiration and I wanted to be a part of that.

I created the blog because I wanted a bigger platform to express myself and my passion. I'm very fascinated and excited by upcoming contemporary artists and entrepreneurs, and I want to help spread the word!

2. Would you say your Scandinavian heritage has influenced your design style at all?

Absolutely. But I love a good mix between different styles. What I appreciate the most about Scandinavian design is the modern simplicity complimented by outstanding craftsmanship. Scandinavians are known for their great artisans and design that can last a lifetime. I appreciate how we implement nature so much, with neutral color palettes and the use of natural materials such as wood, stone, leather and natural fibres. That is exactly what you will find at my place.

3. Which artists, designers or artistic movements serve as sources of inspiration to you?

Constantin Brancusi, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Anish Kapoor, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Ettore Sottsass, Pierre-Augustin Rose, Pierre Paulin, Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé, Sabine Marcelis and Ethan Cook. Those are just a few..

4. What kind of art and design collector are you? Which works of art can be found in your home?

I am very fascinated by stone, so I have a lot of stone tables, decorative objects and interiors. I just designed a bespoke Arabescato coffee table that will arrive very soon. I also have a passion for chairs. My favorites are the Standard chair by Jean Prouvé for Vitra, C-chair by Marcel Gascoin for Gubi, Office chair by Pierre Jeanneret and Bold Chair by Moustache editions.

5. Which artistic venue or cultural center anywhere in the world do you find the most inspiring?

Paris is definitely the number one spot for sourcing inspiration. I love Amelie Maison d'art, Galerie Patrick Seguin, Atelier Brancusi, Musee Picasso, Sotheby's and the gardens and the architecture at the Louvre.

Also the YSL museum located in Marrakesh, designed by Studio KO, which has been a great inspiration to me, regarding architecture and interior architecture.

In Oslo, it must be the Vigeland Museum, which is only minutes away from my home, so I've been there quite a lot. The white sculptures by Gustav Vigeland are beautiful against the brightly colored walls. Definitely one of my favorite cultural venues.

6. And finally, what advice would you give to someone who wants to bring a touch of freshness to their interior without changing everything?

What I love the most is redecorating, and using versatile interiors. Can your nightstand also be used as a side table? Can you mix up your pillows between the bedroom and livingroom? Can you change your wall art? For minor changes for example buy an indoor plant or new fresh flowers, maybe some new pillows, curtains or bed linen. Or maybe paint!
