Aldo Chaparro lives and works between Mexico City, Lima and Los Angeles.
Aldo Chaparro is a Mexican-Peruvian artist whose work focuses on sculpture and architecture. He explores spatial and architectural richness and his works are built from rapid processes.
Throughout his career, under the influence of the artists Michaelangelo, Pistolleto or Robert Morris, the artist has worked on reflection and the mirror effect, which have always been key points in his thinking. Over time, he has developed close links with his favourite materials such as steel, wood and neon.
On his bent steels, the industrial fineness, cleanliness and reflective quality of the metal is in contrast to the violent nature of the sculptures. He applies a force to the materials while letting the steel sheets decide their own shape. His mastery and the technique he has acquired allow him to obtain from the metal a crumpled paper aspect reminiscent of a crumpled sheet thrown in the garbage. The metal thus loses its formal rigour and becomes a fragile element. The process used allows a unique crystallization of colour without damaging the paint during folding. The colourful and glossy finishes are reminiscent of Jeff Koons' sculptures. The work on wood is done in a practice that tends to decontextualize the works from their original field.
His works are part of major collections including those of Simon de Pury (London), Pierre Huber, the Fondation Jumex, Domenico de Sole Chairman of the Board of Sotheby's, and the Perez Art Museum in Miami.
It is frequently exhibited in the most important contemporary art fairs such as FIAC, Arco, Frieze or art Basel.
