Hans Zeeldieb is a Parisian photographer.
"For me, to be a photographer, you have to be sensitive. Like a film. Sensitive to those around you. Managing to leave projecting outside to inside oneself and keep printing. Become yourself a camera. I started to do photography without a camera. Fault find suitable process, I contented myself to use my eyes to capture as best I could the tens of thousands of faces I passed each day in Paris. Yet the need to register, and leave a physical trace of these people was real. What was missing was the process.
After some research, I discovered the Afghan box, a rudimentary camera which I have built on my own. This box, which has the distinction of containing a laboratory, is a very simple system that allows you to take pictures and develop them in moments. This technique perfectly met my expectations.
The long exposure times require subjects to pose, and therefore to grant and take part in the photographic moment. Then comes the time of development, the expectation and surprise. I installed my material on the front of Beaubourg in Paris and became a street portraitist alongside many cartoonists. Today, this activity allows me to live and to be itinerant, going from town to town, doing portraits there."
